Earth 2100

Just finished watching Earth 2100 on the History Channel. It originally aired on ABC in 2010. It was alright, but the entire show looks like it was lifted from Fallout 3, which tells a better post-Apocalyptic warning story. Earth 2100 was accused by many to be fear mongering and promoting a socialist agenda when it first aired, and I can see that.

Wikipedia helped me sum up the plot in the following section:
The special was told through the story of Lucy, a fictional woman born in Miami in 2009 who lives through to the year of 2100. A powerful hurricane hits Miami in 2015 and levels most of Miami. Lucy and her parents move to San Diego, where she eventually becomes an EMT and meets her engineer, future-husband Josh at a protest in 2030. They were protesting the high price of California desalinated sea water (Las Vegas had dried up, and now depends on California for its water supply). In 2050, Lucy, her husband, and their 19 year old daughter Molly move from San Diego to New York city by car. They pass through Texas, which has become a perilous border state flooded with people trying to get from the South to Canada or Eastern US. When they get to the clean powered, efficient, and community garden-fed city of New York City, Josh is hired as an engineer to work on a new flood barrier. The barrier is designed to help guard the city against rising ocean levels. In the years following, when trapped methane in the ice caps is released and rapidly increases the ocean levels, a last ditch effort by world governments is hatched. World governments agree to release sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere in order to cool the planet. This plan is abandoned when it is found that sulfur dioxide actually damages the ozone layer. Lucy meanwhile plays an integral role in neutralizing a new life-threatening disease. In a high tide storm in 2075, Josh is killed trying to fix a stuck barrier gate. As a result, New York City is flooded and Lucy’s daughter and her husband move to an agricultural community in Upstate New York. Lucy refuses to move with them, and instead stays behind to help quarantine a new disease sweeping the planet, which is actually the returning Caspian Fever she helped neutralize years before. Its resurgence is cause by the rotting decay in New York City. Caspian Fever soon becomes a pandemic and kills so many people on Earth that population growth starts shrinking, and eventually it dawns on Lucy and every American that there is no Federal response, no National Guard, no soldiers to keep order. Democracy and civilization at the National level have died in America. Lucy leaves the city with some friends and a dog in 2081, and eventually finds her daughter, now a widow like herself, and her grandson. Initially there is no communication with the world, until someone set up a two-way radio. In 2100, Lucy ponders what wisdom to pass along to her grandson, now denied the education she took for granted, as she is the oldest person in the world.

The actual story was told through “motion comics,” or limited animation. Think Reading Rainbow meets The Walking Dead Graphic Novels. I have never been a huge fan of motion comics, and this special did nothing to change my opinion. I praise ABC for making a two-hour special about the subject, but I wonder why they didn’t make it live action archive clips, re enactment clips or fully animated? I believe the impact of the message would have been made much clearer, as the motion comics can come across as uninspired or even corny at times. Indeed, for me, the most impactful moments of the special were those that were accompanied with real footage. An example of this would be at the end where Earth’s current beauty is highlighted through a series of nature documentary clips. Elizabeth Marvel’s voiceover as Lucy is also the best during these scenes.

The special also incorporates many expert and professional opinions and studies throughout the special. This is where some of the fear mongering and globalization comes from. Some of the experts take a mere scientific approach to predicting the Earth’s future, while others come off as pessimistic Socialist hippies. I have no problem with Socialism; It’s an ideal system that, if instituted properly, COULD work. This system will never work with humans as they are now tho. However, I am a Capitalist and would prefer to stay that way for the time being. Earth 2100 chooses to blatantly promote globalization and Socialism as the only solution this generation has available to save us from this future. This might turn some people off. Again, I am not against a more united Earth, but I do think we can all help each other out without having to be a World Nation.

At the end of the day, I love post-Apocalyptic movies, specials, shows, games, books, whatever. This special had a pretty cool story, but I have played, seen, and read much better. It does get its point across as far as warning us of the dangers we face, but I can’t shake the feeling that they intended to scare the audience more than inspire change and hope.

But maybe you should be afraid of how you’re treating the planet. I am a big proponent for changing the basic structure of our energy systems and power supplies, especially electricity, and it starts with reorganizing or eliminating the greed and corruption within the energy monopolies…

Don’t kid yourself, tho. We should definitely care for this planet, and lessen our carbon footprints, but planet Earth will decide when she’s had enough of the things living on it.

On a side note… Why does History Channel always play their Apocalyptic and Doomsday specials on the weekends? lol

I gotta feel like SOMETHING related to ‘Taker will be hinted at this Sunday… I think Vince and creative are gonna start to really take this WM seriously, I think WMXXVIII is going to be something special, and I think they’re gonna use SS to get it rolling. This year, the Road to WrestleMania starts at Survivor Series, ladies and gentlemen.
As far as who he’ll face? I dunno. I don’t want ‘Taker’s streak to be broken, but I do want it to go to 20-0 and then have him retire. There are three people who I would like to see end the streak, or ‘Taker have his final match with:

1) Shawn Michaels – I say this, but I don’t actually want HBK, as awesome and capable as he still is, to return to the ring. I have a lot of respect for him to be able to bow out and keep his word on not wrestling again.

2) Triple H – Their match at WMXXVII started out a little rough, and in person I have to say it was a little underwhelming. But even so, towards the end, the match was so good that I thought ‘Taker was gonna lose his streak that night. The match was immensely more entertaining on TV
3) Kane – The reason is obvious. He is ‘Taker’s on-screen brother, and I think they had an admittedly jumbled yet intriguing feud last year. I think they could build on that, and have an entertaining program. Kane is actually my personal pick

I guess I would also suggest Mick Foley because a lot of us list the ’98 HIAC Match at KOTR as a favorite… But I’m not so sure that either of them could put on another match like that today

Okay… So first of all, Super Mario 3D Land came out for the 3DS this past weekend. I don’t have a 3DS or money right now, but if I did, I would be boppin’ Goombas right now.

But not so fast, America.

Did you know that if you buy this game, you are promoting cruelty to animals? Did you know that you are teaching your kids to torture, kill, and skin animals to wear? Did you know that if you play this game, you yourself will become an inhumane monster, capable of countless acts of violence towards our four legged friends with fur? Of course you didn’t and that’s just how those evil developers at Nintendo planned it.

You see, for years this company has used its flagship franchise Super Mario Bros., along with the titular mascot Mario, to promote many socially unacceptable, illegal and immoral acts. Children and gamers have for years participated in open hallucinogenic drug use. Whenever Mario ingests a ‘Mushroom,’ he grows in size and becomes Super Mario. Whenever Mario comes into contact with a ‘Starman,’ he becomes invulnerable to physical harm. These are clearly blatant brainwashing tools used to encourage children and gamers to use hallucinogenic mushrooms and LSD.

The premise in most Mario games is to save the oft helpless, yet buxom Princess Peach from the evil and brutish King Bowser, a giant Koopa (A turtle-like creature). Not only is this blatant sexism (Peach is painted as a helpless woman who can’t protect herself from a raping and marauding male antagonist), but it also subliminally promotes male domination. Sure you, through Mario, are tasked with saving the Princess from this villain, which is noble, but don’t be fooled; It is only so that Mario can have her to himself, and force himself upon her whenever he wishes!

Mario is also often accompanied by his brother, Luigi (A homosexual) with whom HE is clearly homosexual. This not only promotes the horrid and sinful act of sodomy and homosexual intercourse, but on top of that, it also promotes incest. All gay people are of course not real people, and homosexuality should be eliminated from the world. So please, I beg you… If you don’t want your children to fondle each others’ genitals, please do not buy games from the evil and fascist Nintendo.

The last issue I’ll talk about today (Although Nintendo is such a criminal organization, I could go on for many more entries) is Nintendo’s clear relationship and promotion of the global fur and animal trade. In many of Mario’s games he brutally tortures, kills, and skins various animals. He then WEARS the skins to assume the animals’ majestic powers. That’s right, your CHILDREN are doing this in a video game! Who knows how far off we are from a video game that allows your avatar to participate in the felony theft of automobiles, fight in a violent war, or even have sex with and beat hookers? I’m sure Nintendo will be the first company to put out a murder simulator like that, and it will most definitely star the ‘innocent’ Mario Bros.

Thank God. Thank God there are people in the world willing to stand up to this cruel and immoral company. The wonderful, caring, and humble freedom fighters at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have come forward and exposed Nintendo for the villains they are. When the game Super Mario 3D Land released this past weekend, PETA selflessly and immediately condemned it as Satan spawn. PETA correctly claims that the game promotes animal cruelty because Mario can skin a tanuki and wear his skin as a costume in order to fly. They even made their own flash game to counter it available on their web site. In their game, you play as a half-skinned tanuki, who doesn’t look creepy at all, chasing after the evil and rabid Mario in an effort to reclaim your bloody fur coat. The game is well made and set in a majestic land covered in blood, skinned tanukis, and fire. THIS is the game your children should be playing! It so more appropriately promotes family values and cognitive learning! PETA has rather selfishly ignored Nintendo’s atrocities in the past (Mario has been skinning and killing frogs, penguins, tanukis and bees and making flesh suits out of them for nearly 20 years), but with this cleverly made and whimsical game they have righted that wrong.

Clearly PETA really do care about animal rights, and have never taken to terrorism or media publicity stunts to bring attention to themselves or their causes. And in this latest statement they have made against Nintendo, they are clearly fighting the good fight.

Do not support Nintendo or their games. They are a terrible, evil company. If you let their games and consoles into your homes, you have committed an unforgivable crime against humanity and will probably become a homosexual, raping, drug addict committed only to stealing cars and killing animals to wear their skins to gain magical powers.
